Emily Carr was born in 1871 in Victoria, Canada, where she died in 1945. She studied in the U.S., the U.K., and France and took nature and the indigenous culture of the Pacific Northwest Coast as her subjects. Her participation at an exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa (1927), brought her national recognition. She received the Governor General’s Award for Non-Fiction with her book Klee Wyck (1941) in 1942.
