Vann Nath was born in 1946 in Wat Sopee and died in 2011 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He survived the torture prison Tuol Sleng through painting, by order of the Khmer Rouge. His works are exhibited in the former secret prison, which was converted into the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum. His paintings, writings, and the film S21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (director: R. Panh, 2003) are testimonies to the crimes of the Khmer Rouge.
