Films

Although a film’s running time can be measured in minutes, the experience of viewing and the memories and reflections fostered in the cinema setting continue for some time afterwards. A film is not an inert object, but is instead vivid. Consider the expression: “this film moved me.” What exactly moved? There was an attraction. The films presented in dOCUMENTA (13) offered various and necessary impulses that shape and influence our ways of thinking and feeling with our shared material world and our positions within it, concerns that lie at the core of dOCUMENTA (13).

The film program presented such films, works that demonstrate conflicts and contradictions between filmmakers and society at large in a range of locations and eras around the world. In particular, it offered a selection of films from Afghanistan that have been inaccessible until recently. Additionally, the program featured a series of films created by artists included in the exhibition, together with a special focus on filmmakers whose works are based on a commitment to fiction, and who imagine the real wildly.
