Readers’ Circle: 100 Notes – 100 Thoughts

What does it mean to read? The Readers’ Circle program invited young scholars, researchers, and cultural practitioners during the 100 days of the exhibition in Kassel to each publicly read one of the 100 Notes – 100 Thoughts in the dOCUMENTA (13) publication series. Each reader choosed a notebook and created a situation where reading became a commentary on the text.

100 Notes – 100 Thoughts is an attempted to move away from the overarching intellectual role played by text in the context of exhibitions. The cumulative nature of the series aimed not at creating a collage, but at responding to the need to integrating the different theoretical inquiries within artistic practice, and responding to the way in which art itself produces thinking beyond any given discipline. These public readings reiterated the thinking methodology the notebooks embody, and produced a contingent murmuring within the body of dOCUMENTA (13). The tension between the personal voice of the author and that of the reader expresses the importance of diegesis, of surpassing and exceeding ourselves through other voices.
