Yan Lei, born in 1965 in Hebei, China, and living in Beijing, studied at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. He has had a solo exhibition at the Aspen Art Museum (2008) and participated in group exhibitions at the Kunstmuseum Luzern (2011) and the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (2009–10), as well as in the Istanbul Biennial (2007), documenta 12 (2007), the Guangzhou Triennial (2005), and the Biennale di Venezia (2003).
