AND AND AND / Event 17 / Rheim Alkadhi / Call for participants and their shoes to walk across the Arab city (Measuring the influence of motion on the pitch of sound) / Amman / May 4, 2012

AND AND AND is an artist run initiative, which will use the time between now and dOCUMENTA (13) in June, 2012 to consider with individuals and groups across the world the role art and culture can play today and the constituent publics or communities which could be addressed. The series of interventions, situations, and occurrences entitled AND AND AND are part of dOCUMENTA (13) and will compose a map of emergent positions, concerns, and possible points of solidarity.

Walls and borders subsumed by the dust of obsolescence, approximately 2019 CE.

For the seventeenth AND AND AND event, we have received the following:

“Call for participants:

Refugees, exiles, third citizens, political prisoners, migrant workers, abandoned lovers, domestic servants, hunger strikers, dreamers, non-status individuals, the poor, the disabled, the Sisterhood, the dispossessed, sexual outcasts, displaced intellectuals, anarchists, telepathic artists, etc.

We need your conscience! Tomorrow we will attach fitted metal plates and vegetable graters to the bottom of our shoes. The effort should be ordinary; who could argue for the uncommonness of shoes? In these shoes we produce the feature of sound by the very act of walking, an accessible attempt at poetry by way of alternately placing one foot in front of the other.

We will begin from Jabal Nasr ("Mount Victory," artifact of revolutionary hope, now a permanent refugee camp). From such victory, we begin humbled, continuing on, then marching along a protest already taking place downtown, continuing further on, past all the revolving circles and ministries, all the embassies that benefit empire, past soldiers, police, and mukhabarat.

We choose to do this here: at the circus-crossroads of senseless wars, brutal occupations, colonial monarchies, delayed mobilities, refugee camps, revolutions, uprisings, and the contemporary participant. Whether we (as contemporary participants) are one or many, we will walk with our metal soles scraping paved and unpaved surfaces, generating audible human movement.

Duration is set according to the time it takes until we are to able to walk through walls, or until they crumble, until we can walk through borders, or until borders are subsumed by the dust of obsolescence. Until then, we adhere to walking on a noisy, varying, directional path.  We will stop to sip water from a plastic bottle before continuing further on.”
