Banff: The Retreat

The Retreat took place at The Banff Centre in conjunction with the annual research residency program, Banff Research in Culture. Graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, academics, activists, writers, and artists from around the world—including artists involved in dOCUMENTA (13)— got together to engage in research and exchange opinions and ideas.
Guest faculty presented lectures that were open to the public during the event.

The Retreat offered those involved an opportunity to step away from the speed and confusion of contemporary life—not in order to abandon its social challenges, political antinomies, or cultural dead ends, but to enter a period of temporary study, reflection, and cooperative exchange whose intent is to generate permanent change. The event was a retreat
during which participants explored the character of our society and undertook artistic and cultural investigation with the aim of creating new modes of becoming and belonging.
