Alexander Kluge was born in 1932 in Halberstadt, Germany. He studied Law, History and Choral Music, completing his Ph.D. in 1956. Trained at CCC Films he began making shorts in 1960. In 1962 Kluge was one of the initiators of the Oberhausen Manifesto and became Director of the Institute of Film in Ulm. He established his own production company Kairos Film in 1963. His films include Die Macht der Gefühle (1983), Die Patriotin (1979), and The Artists UnderThe Big Top: Perplexed (1968). As a writer he received the Adorno Prize (2009) and the Büchner Prize (2003), among others. Since 1988, he has produced weekly cultural programs for television, and in 1992 received the Adolf Grimme Award in Gold.
