William Kentridge was born in 1954 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where he still lives. His major solo survey “Five Themes” has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Jeu de Paume, Paris, and Albertina Museum, Vienna, in 2010. The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the New Museum, New York, co-organized a retrospective in 2001, which followed one at the Palais des Beaux-Arts, Brussels (1998). Group shows include the 16th Biennale of Sydney (2008), documenta 10 (1997) and 11 (2002), and the 20th Bienal de São Paulo (1989). In 2010 he received the Kyoto Prize for Arts and Philosophy.
