Aschrottbrunnen

Once a month, throughout the duration of dOCUMENTA (13), Horst Hoheisel publicly cleans his work Aschrottbrunnen (Aschrott Fountain). It is located in Kassel’s town hall square on the site of the former Aschrottbrunnen fountain, which was built in 1908 with a donation from the Jewish entrepreneur Sigmund Aschrott and destroyed by the National Socialists in 1939. After intense discussions and disputes with the city of Kassel, Hoheisel’s proposal to implement a counter-monument (a recurrent strategy of his artistic practice) as a negative imprint of the original fountain was carried out during documenta 8 (1987). Since then, he has 97 been taking care of and cleaning his work once a month. On March 29, 2011, dOCUMENTA (13) Artistic Director Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev joined him in this process.
