The Monsanto Hearings
The Monsanto Hearings, a project by Compass Collaborative, is the screening of two thirty-minute films on the series of hearings that have been held in the American Northwest region in order to raise awareness regarding the social and environmental impact of the bio-technological farming practices of Monsanto agribusiness. The Monsanto Hearings have provided a public forum for a community to speak about the harmful impact of the massive introduction of genetically modified crops in the US and the world, as well as asking broader questions about the capacity of existing law to promote social and environmental justice. While opinion is sharply divided about GM crops, many of their promised benefits—reduced pesticide use and greater profits for farmers—have failed to materialize, and a mounting body of evidence suggests that they endanger human health, damage our soils, and develop resistant pests and super weeds.
