Charlotte Salomon was a German- Jewish artist. She was born in Berlin in 1917 and murdered in Auschwitz in 1943. In 1939, she fled to France, where between 1941 and 1942, she created her biographical cycle of text and images entitled Life? or Theater? A Play with Music. The work, comprising 769 gouaches, was first exhibited in 1961. In 2007, it was shown at the Jüdisches Museum Berlin and the Galerie im Taxispalais, Innsbruck.
