Judith Butler, born in 1956 in Cleveland, is Maxine Elliot Professor of Rhetoric and Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley, and Co-Director of the Program in Critical Theory. Butler has authored several books, including Frames of War: When Is Life Grievable? (2009), Excitable Speech: A Politics of the Performative (1997), and Gender Trouble: Feminism and the Subversion of Identity (1990).
