Michael Hardt was born in 1960 in Washington, D.C. He teaches at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. His three most recent books are co-authored with Antonio Negri: Commonwealth (2009), Multitude (2004), and Empire (2000).
