Nawal El Saadawi,

Born in 1931 in Kafr Tahla, Egypt, Nawal El Saadawi is a feminist writer, novelist, activist, and psychiatrist who has published social and political manifestos, memoirs, novels, poetry, essays, and plays. Her imprisonment by the Sadat regime in 1981 formed the basis for her book Memoirs from the Women’s Prison (1983). In 2004 she was awarded the North-South-Prize by the Council of Europe for outstanding achievements in the field of human rights.
