Walter Benjamin,

The German-Jewish intellectual Walter Benjamin was born in Berlin in 1892 and died in 1940 in Portbou, Spain. A literary critic rather than a philosopher, Benjamin has influenced generations of thinkers, artists, and cultural producers with his writings and theoretical ideas. Many of Benjamin’s writings were published posthumously, including The Arcades Project (1999 [1983]), Moscow Diary (1986 [1980]), Reflections (1978), and Illuminations (1969).
