The Malady of Death—Monodrama with Jeanne Balibar

The performance The Malady of Death is an adaptation of the novella of the same title (La Maladie de la mort, 1982) by Marguerite Duras. As suggested by Duras in an author’s note, this is not a performance but a reading of the story. Haegue Yang has edited the original script and invited French theatre and movie actress Jeanne Balibar to narrate. A man, referred to by the narrator as “You” pays a woman, referred to as “She,” to spend a number of days and nights with him, since he wishes to learn how to love. Their temporary relationship proceeds in the thoroughly isolated and abstract space of a hotel room by the ocean. The Malady of Death is a once-only event.
