Un-natural Disaster and a Local Community, Mexico

This lecture by Genaro Amaro Altamirano, in connection with Maria Thereza Alves’ installation The Return of a Lake, forms part of Alves’ participation in dOCUMENTA (13). Altamirano, director of the Museo Comunitario del Valle de Xico, Mexico, speaks about the conflicted history and dangerous present situation of Lake Chalco and the Xico area near Mexico City, as well as the role that his museum plays in this conflict. Lake Chalco, testimony to the problematic colonial history of Mexico, has been drained of almost all its water and groundwater supplies, leaving the local community in the Xico region facing an environmental disaster.
