Walking to Breitenau

On July 21, a day prior to the first public broadcasting of dOCUMENTA (13) agent Lívia Páldi’s radio play on the question of Breitenau (see p. 106), Ines Schaber and Gunnar Richter invite visitors to join them on a walk to Breitenau, a memorial site near Kassel of which Gunnar is the director. The walk leaves from the Handwerkskammer, the location in Kassel’s city center where Schaber’s artistic project with Avery F. Gordon, The Workhouse: Room 2, is shown, and ends at Breitenau, nestled in beautiful countryside close to the Fulda. This idyllic site contrasts with the troubling history of social exclusion to which the memorial testifies. Having often walked this route together during the development of all three of their projects, which closely engage with the place, Richter, Schaber and Páldi believe that their series of meandering conversations now calls for a larger audience. They discuss the experience of proximity and distance, surburbia and countryside in and around Kassel, as well as the history of the Breitenau memorial.

The walk starts at Handwerkskammer, Scheidemannplatz at 11 am and ends at around 5 pm at the Breitenau Memorial.
