the dorchester project

By theaster gates

Undertaken by Theaster Gates, this capital development project consists of the adapted reuse of an abandoned two-story Chicagoan house into a library, a slide archive and soul food kitchen. In this new life, the building houses an open to the public collection of 14,000 titles salvaged from a defunct used bookstore, as well as, 6,000 images reclaimed from the University of Chicago’s glass slide collection. This project began in 2008.
